Hungary to Publish Communist-Era Informant Files to Confront Past

Hungary will release the names of tens of thousands of communist-era state informants.

The files document a period from 1945 to 1989 when security services monitored society.

Only about 10% of the 50,000 to 60,000 people named in the files are estimated to be alive today.

The government aims to foster public trust and transparency by making these records searchable online.
