Matthew Maurice caught a red-tagged barramundi worth $1 million while fishing near Darwin.
The catch occurred during a casual night trip with his brother after football training.
Maurice is only the second person to win the top prize in the competition's 12-year history.
The competition continues until March 2027 with 96 smaller $10,000 prizes still available.
