UN Warns Ethnic Cleansing Fears Grow as Israeli Actions Squeeze Gaza Space

The United Nations human rights office warns that repeated displacement and the expansion of Israeli military zones in Gaza are raising fears of ethnic cleansing.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has issued a warning regarding the situation in Gaza, stating that the actions of Israeli forces continue to escalate worries about ethnic cleansing. According to the UN agency, Palestinians residing in the besieged enclave are facing repeated forced displacement into an increasingly shrinking portion of the territory as military operations persist.

Reports indicate that the Israeli military is pushing further past its designated deployment boundary, commonly referred to as the Yellow Line. The agency noted that military personnel appear to treat this boundary as a restricted kill zone, effectively barring residents from returning to what remains of their properties on the opposite side. Additionally, the OHCHR highlighted that civilian infrastructure is being systematically destroyed while displacement sites face ongoing attacks, aligning with stated plans to expand the military deployment area to cover seventy percent of the enclave.

Israeli forces are treating the westward-expanding Yellow Line as a kill zone, according to the UN.

Over the preceding two weeks, documentation from the UN human rights office recorded westward military expansion that forced fresh displacement waves across multiple areas, including Shujayea in Gaza City, alongside eastern Bureij, eastern Deir el-Balah, and eastern al-Maghazi located in Central Gaza. In Shujayea specifically, observers noted multiple attacks on displacement camps alongside the detonation of remaining structures via explosive robots. Further reports detailed an incident where munitions dropped from a drone struck a tent camp at the Shujayea junction, resulting in a fire that displaced numerous families.

Ajith Sunghay, who heads the OHCHR office in occupied Palestine, characterized the ongoing displacement crisis as both acute and chronic. Officials emphasized that individuals displaced prior to ceasefire announcements possess minimal prospects of returning to their original neighborhoods due to restricted access beyond the deployment line. Despite the existence of a ceasefire agreement initiated on October 11, 2025, health authorities report that continuing attacks have resulted in additional casualties, bringing the total death toll since the conflict began in October 2023 to tens of thousands.

Why it matters

This continuous shrinkage of habitable land and the intensification of military deployment zones directly exacerbates the humanitarian emergency for displaced populations in Gaza. The restriction of movement and destruction of remaining civilian infrastructure indefinitely prevents families from returning to their homes, compounding an already severe crisis.
