British Lawmakers Urge UK Sanctions on Israel Following West Bank Border Detention

A British parliamentary delegation detained by Israeli forces at the West Bank border has urged London to impose comprehensive sanctions targeting state institutions rather than isolated settlers.

A delegation of British parliamentarians and international observers has called for comprehensive UK sanctions on Israel after being detained and refused entry into the occupied West Bank. The group, consisting of three British lawmakers and observers on a fact-finding mission organized by Global Justice Now, was interrogated and held by Israeli forces for nearly eight hours before being turned away at the border.

The incident represents the second time in 18 months that a delegation of British MPs has been denied entry by Israeli authorities. Delegates reported that their visit was intended to document conditions under occupation, including assaults on olive harvesters and property destructions, such as a recent military operation in Hebron where troops fired tear gas at journalists recording home demolitions.

Following the detention, members of the delegation argued that recent measures announced by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband against illegal settlements remain insufficient. Emphasizing statements made last month by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich advocating actions in the West Bank comparable to those in Gaza, the delegation warned that violence against Palestinians is driven directly by state policy.

Expanding UK sanctions directly against the Israeli state is necessary to end complicity in illegal occupation policies.

The delegation insisted that Britain must accelerate its measures rather than waiting six months, while widening enforcement to encompass the entire settlement economy. They urged the government to penalize companies providing financing, insurance, and surveillance technology to settlements, including corporate entities bidding for the E1 settlement development.

The group further called for an end to exemptions in Britain's arms export controls. While the British government agreed to halt weapons sales that materially assist the occupation, components for F-35 fighter jets and training licenses for personnel enforcing the occupation remain permitted.

Addressing the crisis in Gaza, where more than 200 journalists have been killed over three years and civilians face starvation and disease, the delegation demanded sanctions against Israeli ministers blocking humanitarian aid. Citing rulings from the International Court of Justice, they emphasized that international law requires the UK to end trade and investment that sustain the unlawful occupation.
