Government forces launch a major counteroffensive in al-Jawf to capture strategic heights from the Houthis and reverse territorial losses.
Al-Jawf has emerged as a major new focal point in the ongoing conflict between forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthis. This development underscores the vital strategic importance of the northern governorate. A significant counteroffensive has been initiated by the Yemeni government army and allied forces to capture critical high ground east of the provincial capital, al-Hazm, from Houthi control.
These military operations form part of Operation Dawn of Yemen, which was launched by the government last month to reclaim territory and restore state authority across the nation. Al-Hazm serves as a central hub for this campaign, functioning as a potential staging ground for government forces. The Houthis have maintained control over Sanaa and the majority of northern Yemen since the war began in September 2014, with control of al-Hazm shifting multiple times over the twelve-year conflict.
Strategic military advances in al-Jawf strengthen government positions and disrupt Houthi supply lines.
## Strategic Significance of Al-Jawf Governorate
The region remains highly coveted due to its extensive border with Saudi Arabia and direct geographic connections to five pivotal governorates, as well as its proximity to Sanaa. Furthermore, the territory acts as a defensive shield for government-held Marib and serves as a gateway to major Houthi strongholds in northern Yemen. Field Commander Colonel Rabie Al-Qurashi stated that government forces secured complete control over the Huwaishan mountain range east of al-Hazm, disrupting rebel supply routes in the eastern axis.
Military and strategic affairs researcher Ali Al-Dahab noted that holding elevated terrain provides immense tactical benefits and psychological advantages, aiding operations toward al-Hazm. Meanwhile, military spokesman Majed Abdullah Al-Nuzaili reported that recent actions are degrading militia capabilities. Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Awadhi emphasized that continuous advances in desert terrain represent enduring military strength, exploiting historical Houthi vulnerabilities in open areas.
These developments coincide with the Presidential Council appointing Major General Amin Ali Al-Akimi as governor and military commander of al-Jawf. Analyst Ibrahim Jalal noted that Al-Akimi's tribal and military influence could help mobilize support, though sustainable success depends on unified command and logistical coordination. Amid these operations, the Houthis reported thwarting advances and launched actions elsewhere, while severe humanitarian challenges persist due to ongoing fighting and sieges in regions such as Taiz and Hodeidah.
Why it matters
Recent military advances by Yemeni government forces highlight the geographic and strategic significance of Al-Jawf. Changes in control over this vital region alter the balance of power in northern Yemen, impacting security dynamics and humanitarian conditions across affected governorates.
