Australia's antisemitism envoy has released an updated plan proposing an independent ombudsman to monitor public broadcaster coverage of the Gaza conflict.

Australia's special envoy to combat antisemitism has released an updated plan proposing the creation of an external independent ombudsman to oversee coverage of the Middle East conflict by the nation's public broadcasters. The proposal forms part of a broader strategy addressing concerns within the Australian Jewish community regarding media reporting and institutional policies.

Under the newly published ASECA Priorities plan, Jillian Segal suggested that greater oversight of the ABC and SBS is necessary. The envoy's report argues that the public interest would be served by detailed analysis and independent review of reporting standards regarding the war in Gaza. Specifically, the framework recommends transferring complaints functions currently handled by the broadcasters' internal ombudsmen to an external authority modelled after sectors like telecommunications and banking.

External independent oversight of public broadcasters has been proposed by Australia's antisemitism envoy.

Segal stated that many members of the community have expressed concern that coverage perceived as one-directional may contribute to hostility against those supporting Israel. The envoy noted that perceptions linking media output to public hostility are a matter of public importance, adding that numerous reports have been received regarding reporting perceived as inaccurate or disproportionate.

The updated proposals also extend beyond broadcasting to institutions including the arts and higher education. The framework suggests that publicly funded arts organisations implement enforceable conditions on artists and retain the option to terminate grants in cases involving antisemitism. Similarly, the envoy recommended that grant authorities be empowered to withdraw funding from academics who engage in antisemitic speech or conduct. Segal emphasized that these recommendations are not intended to limit criticism of Israel, but rather to address forms of prejudice taking root within influential institutions.

Reactions to the updated framework were sharply divided. Critics, including representatives from the progressive Jewish Council of Australia, condemned the proposals as an ideological threat to freedom of speech and academic freedom. Meanwhile, the plan emphasizes the ongoing need to combat various forms of prejudice while maintaining vigilance across public and private sectors.
