Brighton secured a historic away victory over Manchester City thanks to an early goal from Yasin Ayari, moving within two points of the league leaders.
Brighton recorded a historic triumph on Saturday, handing Manchester City a second consecutive defeat in the top flight with a narrow 1-0 scoreline. The result pulled the visitors to within a couple of points of the summit and ended their long wait for a maiden away victory against City at the 18th attempt, bolstering their ambitions of mounting a serious title challenge.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side managed to exact swift revenge for a midweek League Cup penalty shootout elimination against the same opponents. Hurzeler had previously expressed frustration after his squad surrendered a lead at the Etihad Stadium, but this time they successfully protected their advantage after Yasin Ayari finished neatly in the 11th minute.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivered an exceptional performance, repelling intense pressure during a heavy City onslaught after the interval. The away side remained dangerous throughout and could have extended their margin when Jack Hinshelwood struck the side netting late in the contest.
Manchester City had previously enjoyed a flawless start under Enzo Maresca following his arrival to succeed Pep Guardiola. However, the reigning champions face ongoing uncertainty off the pitch while contesting more than 100 alleged breaches of financial regulations. An upheld verdict from the ongoing appeal process could result in substantial point deductions or potential relegation from the division. Meanwhile, the victory leaves Arsenal with the opportunity to claim the top spot should they avoid defeat against Liverpool.
