Disappointing earnings and surging AI infrastructure costs have triggered a severe technology stock sell-off, erasing billions from US markets.
A broad technology sell-off intensified Friday as weak financial reports from major corporations rattled Wall Street and drove US equity markets downward. Over the course of the week, nearly $1 trillion in market value vanished from the technology-focused Nasdaq exchange, contributing to an estimated $2 trillion loss over the past month. Investor scrutiny has grown intensely around major technology firms as questions mount over whether massive capital poured into artificial intelligence can generate swift financial returns.
Major indices reflected the deepening market turbulence. The S&P 500 index declined by over one percent on Friday, threatening to wipe out its gains for October despite hitting a record high earlier in the month. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq composite dropped by more than three percent due to severe tech sector weakness, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a milder decline. Industry giants bore the brunt of the downturn, with Alphabet suffering its worst day on record after reporting increased cash consumption from artificial intelligence investments during the summer months.
Massive AI spending has sparked investor panic and erased trillions from US technology markets.
Other prominent firms faced similar downward pressures. Amazon shares decreased after the company reported lower summer profits alongside higher-than-anticipated expenditures. Intel shares plummeted sharply and approached their worst single-day performance since 1974 after issuing a weaker-than-expected profit forecast for the upcoming quarter, despite beating recent quarterly earnings estimates. Nvidia, widely regarded as a central figure in the artificial intelligence boom, saw its stock drop over three percent, heavily weighing down the S&P 500 index.
Despite the technology sector rout, the broader market displayed mixed results with the S&P 500 evenly split between gainers and losers. Analysts noted that these steep losses overshadowed general market expectations of higher corporate profitability, which had previously propelled indices to record levels despite ongoing consumer concerns surrounding high inflation and fuel prices.
Why it matters
The ongoing market correction highlights growing financial uncertainty surrounding heavy corporate investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. As major technology companies increase spending forecasts to expand capacity, investors are increasingly questioning the timeline for profitability, impacting semiconductor manufacturers, data center builders, and broader market stability.
