Hyrox Athlete Joanna Wietrzyk Admits Continuing Race After Soiling Herself Posed Risks

Joanna Wietrzyk admits her decision to keep racing after soiling herself in Beijing was wrong, describing the subsequent online backlash as traumatic.

An Australian endurance competitor has acknowledged that she placed fellow participants in jeopardy by persisting with a Hyrox race in Beijing last September after experiencing an accidental fecal mishap. Speaking to the BBC ahead of her scheduled return to competition in Hamburg, Joanna Wietrzyk stated that her intense drive to secure victory severely impaired her decision-making abilities during the event.

Approximately halfway through the tournament, the twenty-four-year-old athlete suffered a bout of severe diarrhea stemming from a bacterial food poisoning infection. Despite visible contamination on her person, she chose to finish the contest, which requires participants to alternate between one-kilometer runs and rigorous fitness stations such as sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, indoor rowing, and weighted lunges. Photographic evidence of the incident subsequently circulated widely across digital platforms.

Continuing the race after an accident was the wrong decision, according to the athlete.

Reflecting on the choice, Wietrzyk conceded that she failed to consider those around her and accepted full accountability for the situation. She also expressed regret over an initial, now-deleted social media response that featured defiant phrasing, attributing that post to being in a defensive state of mind while seeking medical assistance. Following the global scrutiny, some rival competitors requested formal apologies from the organization, while Hyrox China reportedly refunded entry fees to affected racers.

Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste acknowledged that failure to intervene immediately during the event constituted a mistake. Consequently, organizers have implemented revised guidelines granting race officials direct authority to remove participants if bodily fluids present contamination hazards or threaten the well-being of others in shared indoor environments. Additionally, competition management instituted bans against individuals directing threats or harassment toward Wietrzyk online.

Having retroactively withdrawn from the Beijing contest and forfeited her placement, Wietrzyk described the ensuing weeks as an emotionally draining ordeal that subjected both her and her family to intense online hostility. Although she prepares to re-enter the competitive arena, the world-record holder noted that the experience prompted a reassessment of priorities, emphasizing that life encompasses dimensions far beyond athletic victories.
