Canada's Leylah Fernandez overcame deficits in both sets to defeat Kamilla Rakhimova and secure her spot in the Tokyo championship match.
Canada's Leylah Fernandez continued her impressive performances during the Asian swing by securing a straight-sets victory against Uzbekistan competitor Kamilla Rakhimova on Saturday. The world number twenty-three triumphed with scores of seven-five and six-three to earn her place in the final of the Women's Tennis Association five hundred tournament held in Tokyo. This upcoming championship clash marks her third appearance in a tournament final for the year twenty-twenty-six, following a recent victory in Singapore and a runner-up finish in China.
The semi-final encounter tested the Canadian competitor as she fell behind an early break in the opening set. She quickly responded by breaking her opponent's serve and regaining control of the match. A similar scenario unfolded in the second set when Rakhimova established an early advantage, yet Fernandez mounted a successful comeback, sealing the victory in slightly under two hours while recording nine aces.
Leylah Fernandez fought back from a break down in both sets to reach the Tokyo title clash.
Rakhimova entered the main draw as a lucky loser after facing elimination during the qualifying rounds and advanced impressively to the semi-final stage. The sixty-sixth ranked player aimed to secure her maiden appearance in a tour-level final but ultimately fell short against the in-form Canadian competitor. Fernandez will now compete against either Diana Shnaider or Mia Pohankova on Sunday as she pursues her seventh career tour title.
This victory extends a strong run of form for the Canadian athlete following her recent title in Singapore and final appearance in China. The outcome sets up a decisive championship match in Tokyo where she aims to claim her seventh tour title of her career.
