US, South Korea and Japan Push for North Korea Denuclearisation
Top diplomats from the US, South Korea and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of North Korea on the sidelines of the G20 meeting.
Senior diplomats from the United States, South Korea and Japan have reiterated their demand for the complete denuclearisation of North Korea, despite Pyongyang repeatedly ruling out abandoning its atomic arsenal. The three nations addressed the situation during the Group of 20 meeting held in Atlanta on Thursday.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi released a joint statement through the US Department of State. The ministers reaffirmed their resolute commitment to removing nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula and pledged the full implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, which include bans on revenue support for North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
The US, South Korea and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of North Korea.
The diplomatic push occurs amid ongoing speculation regarding future talks between Washington and Pyongyang. US President Donald Trump has previously held historic summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and has continued to express a desire to meet him again, raising the possibility of a reconnection at an upcoming APEC summit in China.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has previously suggested that Washington pursue a nuclear freeze in exchange for sanctions relief, a proposal that faced criticism from observers who argue it could tacitly accept North Korea as a nuclear-armed state. Meanwhile, Pyongyang has formally enshrined its atomic status into law and recently dismissed international monitoring efforts, declaring that Western sanctions cannot alter its position as a nuclear-armed nation.
Why it matters
The joint diplomatic stance underscores ongoing international friction over how to manage North Korea's advancing atomic capabilities while navigating potential leadership engagements. This ongoing standoff impacts regional security dynamics in East Asia and shapes broader global proliferation policies.
