A 37-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy have been arrested following an alleged baseball bat attack on a One Nation volunteer in Torquay.
Police have confirmed the arrest of a 37-year-old Hampton Park man and a 14-year-old boy following an alleged assault on a One Nation volunteer at a private residence in Torquay. The incident, which occurred on Victoria’s Surf Coast on Sunday night, has drawn significant attention as authorities investigate the motive behind the confrontation. This case involving a man one party volunteer is currently under active investigation by local law enforcement.
Alleged assault on Scorpio Street
Investigators were called to a premises on Scorpio Street at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. According to a police spokesperson, the victim, a 60-year-old man, was allegedly struck with a baseball bat. The victim was subsequently transported to a hospital to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Following the arrival of police units, the two suspects were apprehended a short time later. The 37-year-old man has since been charged with intentionally causing injury and other related offences; he has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on November 10.
Warren Pickering, the Victorian leader of One Nation, stated that the victim was a party volunteer. Pickering alleged that the altercation began when the suspects interfered with political signage displayed on the victim’s property. Describing the event as un-Australian and unacceptable, Pickering emphasized that political violence and intimidation have no place in the country, noting that political disagreements should be settled through the ballot box rather than physical confrontation.

Rising tensions ahead of state election
The incident occurs as Victorian MPs remain on high alert leading up to the November 28 state election. Several representatives have reported security concerns recently. Last month, federal MP Helen Haines was allegedly attacked, and emergency services minister Paul Edbrooke reported feeling threatened after a bullet marked with his former firefighter number was discovered on his car. Additionally, police are investigating an incident involving Liberal MP Georgie Crozier, where a vehicle swerved toward her and a group of volunteers in Port Melbourne. Authorities are currently searching for a woman who allegedly approached the group during that event.
Why it matters
The increase in reported threats against political figures and volunteers highlights growing concerns regarding security and civil discourse in the lead-up to the Victorian state election. These events affect the safety of community members participating in the democratic process and have prompted heightened police vigilance across the region.
