Authorities investigate fire at Mississippi police department
A suspect has been arrested following an arson investigation at the Senatobia police department, a site recently linked to the fatal shooting of a toddler.
Federal investigators are currently probing an early morning fire at the Senatobia police department in Mississippi. The incident, which occurred on October 31, is being treated as arson by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. While Mississippi officials have confirmed that an arrest was made on Monday in connection with the blaze, no specific details regarding the individual in custody have been disclosed by authorities.
This fire comes during a period of intense scrutiny for the local law enforcement agency. The department has faced significant community unrest following the death of one-year-old Kohen Wiley in June. Wiley was killed when then-sergeant Hunter Foster opened fire during an alleged shoplifting response at a Walmart parking lot. While the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation claimed the vehicle Wiley was in moved toward officers, independent analysis by attorney Ben Crump suggested the child was shot from the side of the vehicle. In October, Attorney General Lynn Fitch deemed the shooting justified, leading to Foster’s subsequent resignation.

A history of departmental tension
The shooting of Kohen Wiley is the latest in a series of incidents involving the Senatobia police force. The department previously faced criticism after the firing of a police chief accused of using racial slurs. Other documented incidents include an officer pointing a stun gun at a Black woman in a handicap space and the arrest of a 10-year-old boy for public urination. These events have fueled ongoing protests and calls for accountability from local activist groups, who recently held a memorial event for what would have been Wiley’s second birthday.
Why it matters
The arson investigation represents a significant escalation in the tensions surrounding the Senatobia police department. The events impact the local community's trust in law enforcement and highlight the ongoing struggle for transparency following the death of Kohen Wiley. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Attorney General’s office for the Northern District of Mississippi.
