A driver who struck a headteacher and dragged him beneath his vehicle in Greater Manchester has been found guilty of murder following a trial.

A driver has been convicted of murder after mowing down a cyclist and dragging him beneath a 4×4 vehicle for more than a mile in Greater Manchester. The case concluded at Manchester Minshull Street crown court, where jurors rejected the defendant's claims that he was unaware of the victim trapped beneath the vehicle.

The incident began when Michael Mullins, a fifty-six-year-old headteacher returning home from Stretford grammar school, was struck by a Volvo XC90 operated by Simon Richardson. The motorist drove straight through give-way markers at an Altrincham junction, sending Mullins onto the bonnet and windscreen before he slid underneath the vehicle.

Prosecutors established that the defendant, aged thirty-five, was fully aware the cyclist was trapped inches below his feet as he continued driving through Warburton. Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Richardson and his front-seat passenger heard moaning sounds shortly after the initial collision, with the driver acknowledging to his cousin that a person was trapped beneath the car.

Instead of stopping to render assistance, the motorist drove to a secluded farm track in Lymm in an attempt to dislodge the victim. He twice tried to pull the injured man from the vehicle before driving erratically to release him onto a grass verge, subsequently running over him again while reversing away from the location. A passing motorcyclist followed a trail of blood to discover the victim alone and barely breathing.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but Mullins, a resident of Northwich in Cheshire, succumbed to multiple injuries. The perpetrator was captured the following day after a police vehicle pursuit, subsequently receiving a separate guilty verdict for dangerous driving related to that escape attempt.

During the trial, the defense argued that the accused did not realize a person was underneath the vehicle and maintained that he never attempted to free him. However, the prosecution successfully demonstrated that the motorist chose to flee in order to escape the legal consequences of the initial collision.

Following the verdicts, the presiding judge discharged the jurors from service for a decade due to the distressing nature of the evidence. Relatives of the victim expressed profound grief, emphasizing the immense void left in their lives and within the school community where Mullins served as headteacher.
