Independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta has announced its permanent closure, pointing to intense pressure from national authorities and special services.

The prominent independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta has announced it is permanently halting its operations, attributing the decision to mounting pressure from state authorities and special services. Editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov confirmed the closure in a video statement released on YouTube on Friday, declaring that the publication is ceasing to exist after facing intense government interference.

Independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta shuts down due to mounting pressure from state authorities.

According to the editorial team, state officials recently searched the home of senior editor Sokolov and detained a journalist earlier this year. Sokolov stated that the organization will officially switch off its servers and vacate its headquarters, marking the end of a thirty-year publishing history. The publication previously scaled back its domestic production following the deployment of troops to Ukraine in February 2022, after which authorities revoked its official media license.

Russia has implemented stringent censorship measures since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, driving numerous independent media workers into exile. Labeled by Moscow as a foreign agent, Novaya Gazeta served as a major platform for independent reporting within the country. The outlet's former leader, Dmitry Muratov, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 in recognition of his dedication to protecting freedom of expression.

The recent closure follows a criminal case involving staff member Oleg Roldugin, who was arrested in April and charged with unlawful access to computerized information. Roldugin, who has maintained his innocence through state media reports, remains under house arrest awaiting trial while authorities maintain their broader crackdown on independent journalism.
