Hyrox Athlete Admits Continuing Race After Soiling Herself Was the Wrong Decision

Australian Hyrox athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has reflected on her controversial decision to continue competing after suffering from diarrhoea during an international event in Beijing this September. In a recent exclusive interview with the BBC, the competitor acknowledged that her strong ambition to secure a victory severely impaired her decision-making process at the time.

The incident occurred roughly halfway through her scheduled athletic event last month. Following the bout of illness, photographic evidence showing faecal matter on parts of her body quickly spread across various online platforms, generating widespread discussion and social media attention.

Reflecting on the situation and the aftermath, the competitor expressed remorse for how her actions impacted those present at the venue and following the events from afar. She noted that her single-minded focus on finishing the competition caused her to overlook the feelings and experiences of the individuals surrounding her.

Continuing to compete after soiling herself was a mistake, according to Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk.

In addition to addressing her choices during the physical trial, she discussed the intense online reaction that followed the publication of images from the event. While acknowledging the public interest, she expressed the view that the scale of the digital backlash was disproportionate, reminding observers that she is human and susceptible to error.

The athlete's candid remarks provide context to an event that drew significant international commentary on social media, highlighting the complex pressures faced by competitors in demanding endurance events.
