Following his conviction for sexual offenses, Russell Brand is now under investigation for two additional rape allegations as police urge more victims to come forward.
Russell Brand, the former high-profile entertainer, is facing investigations into two additional rape allegations, it has emerged following his recent conviction. The 51-year-old, who was once one of the most sought-after figures in British media, was recently found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by a jury at Southwark Crown Court. While he was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault, the legal proceedings have opened the door to further scrutiny of his past behavior.
The investigation into Russell Brand
The Metropolitan Police launched a comprehensive three-year inquiry, known as Operation Actinolite, after allegations regarding the comedian's conduct surfaced in September 2023. Reports published by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4's Dispatches initially brought forward claims from four women alleging rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse. Although Brand denied these claims, the subsequent police investigation resulted in over 340 witness statements, including testimony from former colleagues and associates. Detectives meticulously reviewed his professional body of work, including books, podcasts, and stand-up routines, to build their case.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy noted that the investigation was complex, particularly because the allegations were non-recent, with some dating back 27 years. Without forensic evidence or CCTV, investigators relied on corroborative accounts and testimonies from those who had contact with the victims. During the trial, witnesses described Brand as a "sexual predator" who was "ruthless" in his actions, with some victims reporting that they remained haunted for years. Although Brand was married to singer Katy Perry between 2010 and 2012, she was not among those interviewed by the police.
During his police interviews, Brand consistently provided prepared statements claiming he did not recall the incidents or recognize the complainants, maintaining that any sexual encounters were consensual. However, Detective Superintendent Furphy observed that Brand's demeanor shifted during questioning, noting that he appeared to become more emboldened as the interviews progressed.
Why it matters
The guilty verdicts mark a significant conclusion to a high-profile investigation that has gripped the public. Authorities hope that the successful prosecution will provide the necessary confidence for other potential victims to step forward and report their experiences.
This outcome reflects a broader effort to address historical non-recent sexual assault allegations, proving that cases can be built even in the absence of forensic evidence. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of witness testimony and thorough investigative work in seeking justice for survivors.
