Aave Reopens Frozen Markets But Keeps New Collateral Loans Blocked

Risk service provider LlamaRisk has partially lifted emergency freezes across Aave protocols while maintaining strict borrowing caps and zero-LTV limits on specific tokens.

Following an emergency freeze prompted by an overcollateralized exploit, risk service provider LlamaRisk executed lower borrowing ceilings and temporary interest-rate adjustments across Aave V3 and V4. The intervention is designed to reduce unused capacity while returning borrowing room to pre-Binance hot-wallet levels, even though LlamaRisk estimates the adjustments remove roughly $3.8 billion in dormant capacity. Aave V4 draw caps now apply to individual credit lines through which market spokes draw assets from a shared hub.

LlamaRisk utilized a methodology based on pre-exploit borrowing and observation-time figures plus a two percent buffer, yielding rounded asset-specific limits. While older ceilings drop significantly, they remain above existing debt levels. For instance, Core USDC listed a cap about 248.4 million units above active debt as borrowing declined below pre-incident levels. Meanwhile, queued GHO changes target reductions of 95 million tokens combined across the Core and Prime markets.

During the initial freeze, supply and borrowing operations were halted while liquidations, repayments, and withdrawals stayed active. Reopening supply allows fresh cash into pools, but overall liquidity depends on repayments, withdrawals, and utilization rates. LlamaRisk also deployed temporary Slope2 reductions to lower borrowing rates above optimal utilization points, easing pressure on borrowers without requiring immediate principal repayments.

LlamaRisk partially reopened Aave markets while maintaining strict borrowing caps and blocking new collateral loans.

For new borrowing, several digital assets including USDC, USDT, POL, and various wrapped tokens have been set to zero collateral borrowing power on V3 and V4. These tokens remain available for supply, withdrawal, and repayment once market restrictions lift, provided account liquidity and normal protocol constraints are met. V3 liquidation thresholds remain unchanged, though V4 positions automatically shift to zero-factor configurations upon new borrowing or collateral withdrawal.

Why it matters

The protocol updates alter how users interact with liquidity pools and manage existing positions across decentralized finance markets. While the reopening restores normal operational capabilities for withdrawals and repayments, the restrictions on new collateral loans change borrowing conditions for market participants who rely on specific digital assets.
