Major financial institution Westpac introduces a monthly limit on customer transactions directed toward cryptocurrency platforms to combat fraud risks.
Financial institution Westpac is implementing a new policy designed to curb cryptocurrency scam risks by placing restrictions on customer deposits sent to digital asset platforms. Starting December 1, 2026, the financial institution will enforce a cumulative monthly allowance of A$10,000 across a customer's relevant accounts and associated payment methods.
The regulatory measure applies to multiple channels, including online banking, the official mobile application, credit cards, and debit cards. Transfers made via mobile applications and card payments will share the identical cumulative allowance whenever the institution applies the rule to those specific products. Once the cumulative threshold of A$10,000 is reached within a calendar month, the organization may reject subsequent eligible transactions directed to digital asset platforms until the next month commences.
For joint accounts, each individual holder possesses a separate cumulative monthly limit of A$10,000 across their relevant products. Furthermore, the organization will terminate support for in-branch transactions that it identifies as destined for cryptocurrency platforms, effectively ending branch involvement for those payments while implementing the online transaction caps.

The policy does not permit exemptions or increases for the cumulative monthly limit. Customers planning larger transactions will face the same threshold even when requesting higher allowances. The scope of the policy remains limited to platforms identified by the institution at the exact time a transaction occurs, meaning coverage can exclude certain platforms and specific payment details.
Enforcement of the rule remains discretionary, and transactions exceeding the specified limit may still occur depending on whether the system successfully identifies the destination. Meanwhile, customer withdrawals originating from cryptocurrency platforms into their accounts remain unaffected by this policy, though users must still account for any restrictions imposed by the platforms themselves.
Why it matters
The implementation of these transaction caps changes how customers interact with digital asset platforms by restricting the volume of funds that can be moved from bank accounts into exchanges each month. This measure directly impacts traders and participants who rely on high-volume transactions through traditional banking channels to fund their exchange accounts.
