More than 50.5 million early votes have been recorded across the United States ahead of Tuesday's midterms, with Democratic turnout outpacing Republicans in several tightly contested races.

A record-breaking wave of early participation is sweeping the United States, as more than 50.5 million americans have already cast their ballots ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections. According to data compiled by the University of Florida as of Saturday morning, this total has already surpassed the overall early vote count from the 2022 midterm elections by nearly 5 million ballots. The historic participation comes amid a series of closely contested races that will decide which party controls the United States Congress.

Over 50.5 million voters have cast early midterm ballots, exceeding the entire early total from 2022.

Participation Patterns Among Americans In jurisdictions where party registration is tracked, registered Democrats are currently leading in advance participation. Figures from reporting states indicate that 10.7 million registered Democrats have voted, compared with 7.8 million registered Republicans. While party affiliation does not indicate how individuals marked their ballots, the early tallies arrive amid broad public dissatisfaction with Donald Trump's presidency and unusually competitive battles in historically conservative territory. Republicans are defending a narrow 53-47 majority in the Senate, where Democrats are attempting to secure seats in traditional Republican strongholds including Texas, Alaska, and Kansas.

Texas has emerged as a central focal point of this electoral battleground. More than 7 million ballots have already been cast in the state, exceeding its 2022 midterm early turnout by 1.5 million. In Harris County, which encompasses Houston, early voting reached 862,700 by Wednesday, up sharply from 564,500 at the same point during the 2022 midterms. The county has leaned Democratic in recent cycles; Kamala Harris carried it by nearly 6% in the 2024 presidential election, and Democratic Senate nominee Colin Allred won there by approximately 11% against incumbent Ted Cruz. This year, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is competing against Democrat James Talarico for the Senate seat, while Republican Governor Greg Abbott is running for re-election against Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on the Texas Senate race, prompting Trump to make three separate visits to the state within a single month.

Similar surges in advance voting are visible across other key Senate battlegrounds. In South Carolina, where Trump secured victory by nearly 18% in 2024, early voting is up by 83% compared to the 2022 midterms. Early participation has also expanded by 34% in Kansas, 44% in Maine, and 32% in Michigan. Against this backdrop of heightened turnout, Trump has traveled extensively to safe Republican states to assist struggling candidates. At a Friday evening rally in Florida, the president commented on candidate appearances, minimized concerns over rising gasoline prices in favor of oil company profits, and remarked on the grueling schedule, stating: "I thought this was it. I thought I could relax. Twenty-eight days of this crap in a row is a lot. It’s a lot."

Why it matters The outcome of these midterm elections will establish which party controls the US House of Representatives and the Senate for the remaining two years of Trump's second presidential term. Congressional leadership directly impacts the federal government's policy direction on pressing domestic and international matters, including the ongoing war involving Iran, widespread concern over government corruption, and household financial strains driven by the rising costs of gasoline, food, and basic necessities.
