Binance Hit by Massive Crypto Hack Worth Billions
Binance has suffered what is believed to be the largest cryptocurrency hack in history, losing an estimated 6.3 billion dollars.
The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has suffered a massive security breach resulting in the theft of an estimated 6.3 billion dollars, in what is believed to be the largest crypto hack in history. The incident occurred on the platform's global centralised exchange, Binance.com, while the separate Binance.us service confirmed it was unaffected.
Binance has suffered a historic cryptocurrency hack estimated at 6.3 billion dollars.
Richard Teng, the co-chief executive officer of Binance, stated that the initial investigation indicates the security incident may have begun with a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. This access allegedly allowed an attacker to reach a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions, forming part of a complex attack process rather than a simple action.
Cybersecurity experts suggested that malware could have been delivered to the engineer's device during a simulated test, subsequently granting a pathway into production environments and user wallets. While the identity of the perpetrators remains unconfirmed, certain analytics firms and an investigation report from TRM Labs noted similarities to previous cyber attacks linked to North Korea and the Lazarus Group, though North Korea has consistently denied such involvement.
Following the breach, Binance temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals as a precautionary measure. Teng assured registered users that their funds remain safe and announced that the exchange will fully cover all losses utilizing its emergency reserve alongside company funds. Partners are currently assisting the platform in freezing affected assets, with reports indicating approximately 3 billion dollars have been located so far, and withdrawal services are expected to resume within a 45-hour timeline.
