Strive CEO Matt Cole says the record Binance hack does not alter Bitcoin's long-term investment case, though calling a market bottom is premature.

Following the record $6.3 billion exchange breach, Bitcoin has held up better than expected, according to Strive Chief Executive Officer Matt Cole. Speaking on Cointelegraph’s Chain Reaction on Friday, Cole stated that the incident has not altered his long-term investment case for the cryptocurrency. He likened the attack on Binance’s wallets to a bank robbery rather than any underlying failure of the decentralized network itself. CoinGecko data showed that Bitcoin traded near $77,400 on Saturday afternoon, sitting approximately four percent below its valuation just before the exploit unfolded on Thursday.

Strive, a publicly traded firm maintaining Bitcoin on its balance sheet, held 43,000 BTC as of October 23. Cole noted that the magnitude of the decline was milder than anticipated given the severity of the security event and wider market conditions. While expressing conviction that the event will not impact the long-term thesis over a reasonable time horizon, he cautioned that it remains premature to declare a market bottom. He characterized the current market environment as an early recovery phase lasting another half-year to nine months, marked by gradual price appreciation rather than immediate parabolic surges.

Industry experts have echoed the distinction between the exchange incident and the network integrity. Wirex financial crime director Paul Chapman emphasized that the blockchain itself was untouched, noting the event targeted a single company rather than the foundational network. Meanwhile, Blockaid Chief Executive Officer Ido Ben-Natan indicated that attackers likely compromised the transaction signing process. Although Binance reported no evidence of leaked wallet private keys and stated that its internal inquiry remains ongoing, analysis revealed signed authorizations that could have been blocked by prior validation checks.

The record Binance breach has not altered the long-term investment case for Bitcoin.

According to Glassnode figures, Thursday's breach ranks as the largest recorded cryptocurrency exploit, surpassing the combined losses of the subsequent nine largest incidents. This event follows the February 2025 Bybit exploit, which previously held the record at $1.5 billion. Historical data from Anchorage Digital indicates that Bitcoin typically experiences an average decline of over eight percent within the first twenty-four hours following exchange exploits, making the recent resilience notable in comparison.

Why it matters

This incident highlights ongoing security challenges within centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, distinguishing platform vulnerabilities from the underlying network technology. For market participants and institutional holders, the event tests confidence during a broader recovery phase, demonstrating how asset valuations respond to unprecedented exchange breaches.
