Strategy posted record operating income as Michael Saylor declared a new Bitcoin bull market, though financial results reveal rising accumulation costs.

Strategy reported a record $20.9 billion in third-quarter operating income alongside net income of $19.5 billion, as Michael Saylor declared a new Bitcoin bull market. The financial results released on October 29 compared favorably with roughly $2.8 billion in net income a year earlier, driven almost entirely by a $20.9 billion gain from changes in the fair value of its cryptocurrency holdings. This performance reinforced optimism from leadership regarding institutional demand and broader banking adoption.

Despite the positive earnings report, the company's accumulation strategy has not translated into stronger per-share exposure. Strategy reported a negative 3.7 percent year-to-date BTC yield as of October 25, reversing from 4.5 percent in July. This deterioration occurred even as total cryptocurrency holdings increased to 848,517 BTC, valued at approximately $68.9 billion based on the October 23 reference price. Other performance indicators also declined, including a BTC Gain metric falling to negative 24,947 BTC and a dollar gain of negative $2.03 billion.

Rapid accumulation costs have raised questions about financing sustainability despite growing treasury reserves.

The divergence stems from aggressive capital markets activity where the firm raised $21.2 billion during the first ten months of 2026. During the third quarter, the company generated $5.4 billion from common stock sales while utilizing just $588.1 million of those proceeds to purchase cryptocurrency. Consequently, the treasury increased by only 1,666 BTC during the quarter after buying 7,218 BTC and selling 5,552 BTC to help manage liabilities.

Financial Sustainability and STRC Financing Costs

Central to the debate over financial sustainability is STRC, a variable-rate perpetual preferred security allowing capital-raising without immediate common share issuance. However, its 12 percent annualized dividend rate creates recurring obligations that required selling approximately $431.8 million worth of cryptocurrency in 2026 to help finance preferred stock dividends and repurchases. The company spent over $2 billion repurchasing approximately 20.98 million STRC shares, while cumulative preferred dividends reached nearly $1.5 billion.

Analysts offered contrasting assessments regarding these funding models. Research from K33 suggested the firm could have achieved nearly identical cryptocurrency accumulation without relying so heavily on STRC, avoiding substantial dividend obligations. Conversely, Bitwise offered a more favorable evaluation of the underlying position.

Why it matters

These financial reports highlight the complex relationship between aggressive corporate treasury accumulation and shareholder dilution risks. For investors tracking saylor bitcoin holdings and broader cryptocurrency market trends, the reliance on complex preferred-stock financing models demonstrates that record operating income does not always guarantee efficient per-share asset growth.
