The lead barrister for the Post Office Horizon inquiry will head an independent review into the tragic death of Cambridge academic Jason Arday.
The lead counsel for the Post Office Horizon inquiry has been appointed to lead an independent review examining the handling of allegations against the late Cambridge academic Jason Arday. Jason Beer KC will investigate the university's recruitment processes, support systems, and institutional arrangements following the death of Arday, who had been appointed as Cambridge University's youngest-ever black professor at the age of 37.
Arday passed away at his home in south London while facing widely publicised accusations of plagiarism and inconsistencies regarding his career statements. Although he firmly denied the plagiarism allegations, Cambridge announced an official investigation into his academic qualifications on 5 August. Arday tendered his resignation just hours after the announcement and was found dead nine days later.
Beer stated that his inquiry would look beyond basic compliance to determine whether institutional policies were reasonable, how they functioned in practice, and who bore decision-making responsibilities. He also plans to assess the level of institutional protection offered to academics facing significant public and media scrutiny.
Jason Beer KC will investigate Cambridge University's procedures surrounding the tragic case of Jason Arday.
This independent assessment represents the second review initiated by Cambridge regarding its engagement with the professor. In September, the university appointed former chief crown prosecutor Nazir Afzal to examine the support provided to Arday immediately prior to his death. Prof Deborah Prentice, the vice-chancellor of Cambridge, praised Beer as an eminent legal expert with extensive experience handling complex investigations.
Why it matters
The appointment of a high-profile legal expert to scrutinise institutional policies impacts how universities handle allegations of misconduct and manage public scrutiny involving high-profile faculty members. The findings and recommendations from the review are expected to shape future institutional changes at Cambridge and potentially influence academic governance standards across the broader higher education sector.
