Australian design platform Canva is cutting or relocating over 1,200 roles in a major corporate restructure described by its chief executive as the hardest moment in its history.

Global design giant Canva has announced a major restructure that involves cutting or relocating more than 1,200 jobs, representing 22% of its global workforce. The changes will impact 1,271 people in total as the Australian-founded company moves to collapse management layers and bring more teams together in person.

Chief executive Melanie Perkins addressed the workforce in an email on Wednesday, calling the workforce reduction without doubt the hardest moment in the company's thirteen-year history. While she noted that some individuals would face role changes or relocation to centralized hubs, she acknowledged that the process meant saying goodbye to colleagues who helped build the platform.

Regarding support for departing staff, the company confirmed that affected employees will receive a minimum of six months of salary alongside extended healthcare coverage for a full year in applicable regions. Furthermore, departing workers will be allowed to keep their work laptops and can apply for grants worth US$10,000 to assist in establishing new business ventures.

As people search for details regarding canva layoffs, the graphic design firm joins a broader wave of operational overhauls across the technology sector. Other major technology companies, such as Atlassian, Block, and WiseTech Global, have similarly implemented significant staff reductions.

## Why it matters

The workforce changes at one of Australia's premier startups highlight ongoing shifts within the broader technology industry as companies adapt their operational structures. Although Canva did not explicitly cite artificial intelligence in its restructuring announcement, the software sector as a whole continues to navigate a competitive environment influenced by emerging technology disrupters and internal adaptations.
