Finland Police Investigate Google Over Data Centre Environmental Damage
Finnish authorities have opened a criminal investigation into Google regarding suspected environmental law breaches at a data centre site in northern Finland.
Finnish law enforcement agencies have initiated a criminal inquiry into suspected environmental law violations connected to a planned Google data centre in the northern region of the country. The disputed project forms part of an expansive fifteen billion dollar artificial intelligence infrastructure investment package announced recently by the technology corporation.
Local authorities reported that a Finnish subsidiary of the tech firm performed forest clearing and drainage operations near Muhos before completing the legally mandated environmental impact assessments. Investigators are examining whether these actions violated national water legislation and caused ecological harm, which could potentially result in a corporate financial penalty upon conviction.

The widespread forest removal and the company's initial response triggered significant public backlash across the nation, where environmental preservation is highly valued. Public figures have criticised the oversight, noting that major corporations must adhere strictly to local legal requirements. Authorities previously instructed the technology giant to halt operations at the location in early October following identified problems with site drainage and water management.
Despite the public criticism, some lawmakers have noted that domestic forestry enterprises remain the primary drivers of local biodiversity loss. Finland has increasingly attracted major data centre investments due to favourable climatic conditions, clean electricity availability, and official backing for artificial intelligence initiatives.
Grid operators project that artificial intelligence facilities will significantly increase national electricity consumption in upcoming years. The planned development by the American corporation encompasses facilities, power grid upgrades, and renewable energy installations intended to support widespread digital services.
