Helicopter Carrying Six People Crashes in Uttarakhand
Rescue teams are searching for survivors after a helicopter carrying six people crashed in northern India amid heavy rain and poor visibility.
Authorities in northern India have launched a search operation for survivors after a helicopter carrying six individuals crashed in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand. The aircraft, which had five pilgrims on board alongside the crew, went down near a village in the Chamoli district close to Joshimath, according to the state leader Pushkar Singh Dhami. Officials reported that the aircraft lost contact on Friday afternoon following its departure from the Hindu pilgrimage site of Badrinaths. The search for survivors has been initiated across the rugged terrain, though the status of the passengers remains uncertain.
Rescue Operations Under Way
Chief Minister Dhami stated that a coordinated rescue effort involving the local administration, the disaster management division, and the State Disaster Response Force is actively underway in the affected zone. The leader noted that he is closely supervising the situation and has given directives for any critically hurt individuals to be transported by air for medical care. The cause behind the aviation accident is currently unknown, though weather conditions at the time involved heavy precipitation, reduced visibility, thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds, matching an orange warning issued by the national meteorological service.

Pilgrimage Route Safety Concerns
Badrinath represents one of four revered locations on the Char Dham pilgrimage route, which attracts millions of devotees annually despite challenging topography. Because navigating the steep valleys can be difficult, aerial transport options have gained significant popularity among travelers attempting to bypass arduous land routes. However, prior incidents have raised concerns regarding transport safety on these routes. Previous fatal crashes occurred near Kedarnath in recent years, leading aviation regulators to implement stricter safety evaluations and operational limitations following multiple incidents during the pilgrimage seasons.
