A relief convoy has reached the besieged Ukrainian town of Oleshky carrying food and medicine amid a localized truce mediated by the United States.

An international aid convoy has successfully entered the Russian-held town of Oleshky in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region following prolonged efforts to organize a relief mission for local residents. According to reports from the Russian newspaper Izvestia on Friday, the delivery included essential food and medical supplies, arriving as a six-day localized ceasefire brokered by the United States entered its third day. The temporary truce has provided a brief pause in hostilities, allowing humanitarian operations to proceed in the devastated area.

Humanitarian Efforts and Evacuations

Russian state television channel Vesti reported that Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova met overnight in Oleshky. Lantratova stated that twenty-five buses, featuring at least 750 seats, were positioned to evacuate individuals wishing to leave the city, which was captured by Russian forces following the onset of the conflict in February 2022. Evacuations were scheduled to proceed until mid-afternoon local time. Lubinets noted in a statement that remaining inhabitants would be able to depart securely, emphasizing the necessity of preserving the ongoing ceasefire.

Both nations previously confirmed the completion of demining operations surrounding Oleshky, clearing the path for the delivery of aid and the departure of residents. Lantratova added that two individuals lost their lives during the city's demining process. The White House stated that the ceasefire was successfully mediated by US First Lady Melania Trump after she learned about the severe humanitarian crisis during the United Nations General Assembly in September. Once inhabited by approximately 24,000 residents, Oleshky currently lacks electricity, heating, and running water as another winter approaches. Up to 2,000 people remain in the settlement, which the White House described as being on the brink of disaster due to critically low food and medical supplies. Meanwhile, the Vatican presented a different perspective, indicating that the pope contributed to the pause in fighting through direct communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Broader Conflict Continues

While Moscow and Kyiv have maintained the localized truce in and around Oleshky since Tuesday, the wider conflict that began more than four years ago persists elsewhere. Ukrainian officials reported via the Telegram messaging app that Russian forces struck an industrial facility near Kremenchuk, alongside attacks on Kyiv and Kharkiv. Moscow stated that its operations targeted energy infrastructure in and around the Ukrainian capital and the Dnipropetrovsk region, port facilities in Odesa, and cargo vessels allegedly utilized by the military. In response to regional aerial activity, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported on Telegram that Russian air defenses intercepted most of the more than eighty drones directed toward the Russian capital overnight.
