A growing public outcry has emerged in California following the violent detention of a 20-year-old US citizen by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Erik Zepeda, a high school student with disabilities, was stopped while walking to class in the agricultural city of Santa Maria last month. The incident, which left Zepeda with a fractured wrist requiring surgery, has prompted local leaders and lawmakers to condemn the actions as racial profiling and demand a full investigation.
Zepeda, who lives in a group home and requires assistance with communication, described the encounter in writing. He stated that he was walking to school as he does every day when agents tackled and handcuffed him. "I thought they were going to kill me," Zepeda said, noting that he had done nothing wrong. A volunteer observer who witnessed the October 21 event recorded the interaction, which showed masked agents pinning Zepeda face-down before placing him in a vehicle. After being driven around, Zepeda was released and walked the remaining distance to school, where staff called for medical assistance.

Official Responses and Investigations
Democratic US Senator Adam Schiff described the incident as "grotesque and heartbreaking," calling for accountability. Representative Salud Carbajal, whose district includes Santa Maria, characterized the conduct as "thuggish" and has formally requested a transparent investigation from the Department of Homeland Security. Local authorities, including the Santa Barbara County District Attorney and the Santa Maria Police Chief, have confirmed that investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
Legal representatives from Democracy Forward, who are now representing Zepeda, have accused ICE of assaulting their client and subsequently issuing false public statements to cover up the incident. While an ICE spokesperson claimed the agents were conducting a targeted operation and that Zepeda resisted, the studentโs attorneys pointed to hospital records confirming surgery for a fractured wrist as evidence contradicting the agencyโs claims.
Why it matters
The incident highlights rising tensions regarding immigration enforcement in California, where increased activity has led to multiple hospitalizations. This case serves as a critical point of concern for civil rights advocates who argue that such actions disproportionately impact vulnerable populations through racial profiling.
