A human rights organisation reports that travel restrictions by Israel are blocking hundreds of young amputees in Gaza from receiving medical care abroad.
A Geneva-based human rights group has stated that travel restrictions imposed by Israel are preventing hundreds of children with amputated limbs in Gaza from seeking specialized medical treatment abroad. According to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, more than one thousand children have undergone limb amputations as a result of ongoing violence during the israel gaza conflict, yet very few are receiving necessary long-term care.
The human rights monitor released findings showing that 1,134 children in the region suffered limb loss due to military actions. Meanwhile, figures from the World Health Organization indicate that between September 2024 and May 2026, a total of 2,300 adult and child amputees were assessed for potential treatment, but fewer than a quarter managed to receive permanent prostheses.
Medical Infrastructure Shortages
The organization highlighted a severe shortage of resources within the strip, noting that only eight certified professionals in prosthetics and orthotics currently practice in the area. Furthermore, essential equipment required to manufacture, fit, and adjust artificial limbs is largely missing due to import restrictions that block necessary materials and specialized teams from entering the territory.
Israeli travel restrictions and entry bans prevent injured children in Gaza from receiving necessary prosthetic care.
Medical experts warn that without timely interventions, these children face permanent disabilities. Gaps in follow-up care and the inability to modify prosthetic devices as the patients grow older can lead to chronic pain, mobility issues, and additional health complications.
The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor also highlighted the case of an eleven-year-old boy who lost a hand and suffered paralysis after an artillery strike near him. Despite needing multiple surgeries overseas and an artificial limb, he remains trapped due to closed border crossings.
Why it matters
Israeli restrictions on travel and medical evacuations prevent children in Gaza from being treated abroad. This situation directly affects young amputees by blocking access to permanent prosthetics, adequate rehabilitation, and necessary surgical procedures, risking permanent disability and chronic health complications.
This ongoing denial of specialized medical care and rehabilitation impacts thousands of individuals and families in the region, highlighting a critical shortage of healthcare infrastructure and professional personnel available to address severe wartime injuries.
