A military court in Lebanon has charged 13 individuals with trafficking explosives following a major truck seizure, as pressure grows on the group to disarm.

A Lebanese military court has filed charges against 13 individuals accused of trafficking explosives, tied to recent developments concerning the lebanon hezbollah situation. Judicial authorities stated that the charges announced on Friday include weapons possession, creating illegal associations, and actions undermining state security. State media reported that out of the 13 accused individuals, two were detained during the initial interception while eleven others remain at large, with five identified only through nicknames.

The formal accusations originate from an incident earlier this month at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint, a crucial transit point connecting the capital of Beirut with the eastern Bekaa Valley. Authorities intercepted a transport vehicle carrying a substantial payload totaling 780 kilograms of explosive material, which included 250 kilograms of TNT alongside 250 kilograms of C-4 plastic explosives.

Hezbollah has openly acknowledged ownership of the intercepted shipment. Representatives for the group insisted that the materials were designated exclusively for defensive operations against military forces occupying southern regions of the country. Lawmakers affiliated with the political faction argued that the accused individuals acted to protect national sovereignty rather than threaten state stability, while demanding the release of the detained individuals and the return of the seized payload.

Military court charges thirteen suspects following the seizure of a major explosives shipment.

Political opponents in Lebanon have expressed concern regarding the presence of smuggled munitions within domestic borders, fearing potential internal fallout despite investigators finding no proof of such intentions. The legal action coincides with heightened domestic and international pressure on the faction to surrender its military wing. Authorities in Beirut, led by the prime minister, have pledged firm action against weapons maintained outside legal parameters.

In recent months, diplomatic efforts led to a framework agreement addressing southern territorial occupation and calling for military realignment. However, leadership figures within the faction have dismissed the framework as invalid, maintaining that defensive preparations must continue while foreign military attacks persist across southern villages.

Why it matters This legal development escalates domestic tensions surrounding armed factions operating outside state control in Lebanon. The unfolding situation directly impacts regional stability, ongoing diplomatic efforts regarding territorial sovereignty, and broader security dynamics across the Middle East.
