Lionel Messi makes history as the first player to win consecutive MLS Golden Boot awards, guiding Inter Miami to the playoffs.
Lionel Messi has secured his place in Major League Soccer history by becoming the first player to win consecutive Golden Boot awards. The Argentinian superstar finished the regular season with 26 goals, successfully defending his top goal-scoring honor despite not scoring in his club's final fixture. Inter Miami wrapped up their regular season campaign with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Charlotte at Nu Stadium on Saturday.
Messi MLS Goals Power Miami's Playoff Push
Although Messi did not find the back of the net on Saturday, he orchestrated the attack by setting up the team's first two goals from corners to help secure home-field advantage for the opening two playoff rounds. Ian Fray opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a corner fell to Charlotte defender Luca de la Torre. In the 33rd minute, another Messi delivery found Luis Suarez unmarked at the near post for a header, pushing the score to 2-0. Rodrigo De Paul added a third strike before the halftime whistle.
Charlotte responded strongly after the interval. Liel Abada netted a brace with goals shortly after the break, and Rodolfo Aloko secured a late equalizer in the 90th minute by reacting first to a rebound off the post. A frustrated Messi hit the woodwork during stoppage time, while Aloko narrowly missed an improbable winner for the visitors with a shot into the outside netting. Defending champions Inter Miami ultimately finished second in the Eastern Conference standings with 60 points.
Petar Musa of Dallas finished second in the scoring charts with 22 goals after failing to score in his side's victory over Colorado. Meanwhile, Nashville claimed the top spot in the East and broke the all-time league points record by reaching 77 points following a 2-0 win against Cincinnati. Inter Miami's opening playoff fixture will pit them against Columbus.
