The Saudi-led coalition stated it intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone aimed at the Mecca region, while the rebel group denied targeting the Muslim holy city.

The Saudi-led coalition operating in Yemen announced that its defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle launched by Houthi rebels toward the Mecca region in Saudi Arabia. According to coalition officials, the incident occurred on Friday morning when air defense units detected and neutralized the incoming airborne threat. This development unfolds amid an ongoing intensification of cross-border hostilities between the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government and the Iran-backed Houthi movement.

Prior to the Friday morning event, coalition spokespersons reported that a separate cruise missile aimed at western Saudi Arabia had also been brought down. The escalation follows a series of similar aerial attacks throughout the week. On Thursday, the military coalition stated it destroyed a ballistic missile directed at the kingdom's eastern region, followed by the interception of two additional ballistic missiles launched toward the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

Coalition forces intercepted a drone targeting the Mecca region, though Houthi representatives strongly denied aiming at the holy city.

In response to the accusations regarding the Mecca region, a spokesperson for the Houthi movement issued a denial, asserting that the group did not target the Muslim holy city or its surrounding areas. The representative maintained that their ongoing cross-border operations remain strictly directed at Saudi military bases and petroleum infrastructure. Furthermore, the Houthi spokesperson dismissed the coalition announcements as fabrications propagated by the ruling authorities.

The Saudi-led coalition has previously brought forward accusations alleging that the rebel faction has directed drones toward Islam's two principal holy sites in Mecca and Medina. Despite ongoing international diplomacy and diplomatic efforts, military engagements continue without any indication of a de-escalation. International humanitarian organizations have expressed growing concern over the persistent hostilities, warning that the continuous military actions are contributing to deteriorating living conditions for civilians across the affected region as the conflict persists unabated.
