Indian equity markets traded significantly higher on Thursday, with the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 staging a strong rally. The positive momentum in the stock market today was driven by a sharp correction in international crude oil prices and improving global sentiment following US midterm election results. The Nifty 50 opened with a gain of 490.60 points, or 2.05%, reaching 24,451.20, while the BSE Sensex climbed to 79,017.53 in early trade.
The market rally extended beyond benchmark indices, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks participating in the gains. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.46%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 1.49%. Sectoral performance was led by Nifty Private Bank, which gained 2.55%, followed by Nifty Realty and Nifty IT. This upward movement follows a fifth consecutive session of gains for domestic equities, which had already seen the Sensex close above the 77,000 mark on Wednesday.
Falling crude oil prices and renewed foreign institutional buying have fueled a strong rally in Indian equities.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have returned as significant buyers, providing a major boost to domestic sentiment. According to Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, the revival in overseas fund flows marks an encouraging development for domestic equities, as sustained institutional participation could lend greater depth to the ongoing market recovery. Provisional data indicated that foreign investors purchased Indian shares worth Rs 72.84 billion on Wednesday, marking their fourth consecutive session of buying.
The global backdrop remained supportive, with Asian equities advancing after Wall Street responded positively to US election outcomes. Brent crude futures declined further to $93.5 per barrel, offering relief to India as a major oil-importing nation. However, industry executives noted that the decline in energy prices may not be permanent, as political complexities regarding the conflict in West Asia could still influence supply chains and consumer costs.
Looking at longer-term trends, the market has evolved significantly since Diwali 2024. While the Nifty 50 has delivered steady returns, the Price-to-Earnings (PE) ratio has moderated from 22.5 to 19.1 heading into Diwali 2026, presenting a more attractive valuation landscape. Despite this, experts suggest that in an environment of elevated global interest rates, a bottom-up, stock-picking approach remains essential for investors looking to navigate market mechanics.
Why it matters The outlook for the stock market remains closely linked to developments in global markets, particularly the sharp movement in crude oil prices. As India is heavily dependent on oil imports, the recent correction in energy costs provides essential relief to the domestic economy and strengthens the rupee. These fluctuations directly impact investor sentiment and the broader financial stability of the region.
