US Seeks Removal of Leaked Database Containing ICE Personnel Data

The Department of Homeland Security has urged an Icelandic host to take down a leaked database featuring details of tens of thousands of federal employees.

The United States Department of Homeland Security recently asked an Icelandic web hosting firm to remove a website containing sensitive information about tens of thousands of federal workers. This move highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the publication of immigration enforcement records. The Icelandic company, FlokiNET, published a communication it received from a cybersecurity organization acting on behalf of the homeland security department. The document stated that the published dataset was stolen and requested the removal of the content, arguing that it exposed numerous identifiable individuals to potential harassment and physical threats.

The database in question was originally compiled by a group called Distributed Denial of Secrets, which regularly publishes leaked government information. Another collective known as the Department of Peace claimed responsibility for acquiring the records. The information features staff members from multiple federal immigration agencies, including Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. These divisions have experienced intense public scrutiny amid recent mass deportation initiatives.

Icelandic web company FlokiNET defended publishing the employee data as fulfilling a legitimate public interest.

FlokiNET refused to comply with the takedown demand, asserting that individuals carrying out public enforcement programs are not private citizens during those duties. The company argued that the public maintains a rightful interest in understanding who executes these government operations. Although the Icelandic host did not yield to the request, the domain's registrar ultimately suspended the site, leading the dataset to migrate to an alternative address.

Administration Pushback Against Online Tracking Tools

This incident follows previous efforts by the administration to suppress online platforms tracking federal immigration agents. Last year, the Department of Justice urged major technology companies to eliminate mobile applications designed to monitor enforcement activities. That previous pressure drew criticism from lawmakers and civil liberties advocates who questioned whether restricting access to such tools infringes upon rights related to recording government conduct.

Meanwhile, immigration personnel have frequently concealed their identities during operations by wearing masks or civilian attire. Human rights organizations have criticized this lack of transparency, pointing to difficulties in addressing complaints of excessive force or civil liberties violations. Since the current presidential term began, multiple individuals have been injured or killed during encounters involving immigration agents, further intensifying public debate over accountability and oversight.
