Virgin Media O2 is planning thousands of job cuts as part of an £800m cost-saving initiative aimed at addressing its significant debt pile.

Telecommunications company Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to cut thousands of jobs as part of an £800m cost-saving drive designed to tackle its £22bn debt pile. The firm, which is jointly owned by Telefónica and Liberty Global, stated that £300m of the targeted savings will come directly from workforce reductions. This move is expected to decrease the employee wage bill by 30% over the next two years. While the exact number of job losses was not specified, officials noted that up to 25% of the total 16,000 workforce could be impacted. Most of the reductions will focus on non-customer facing roles.

Chief executive Lutz Schüler explained that standing still is not an option for the business. The company intends to integrate artificial intelligence tools into various operations, including customer service, fault management, and network planning, to improve efficiency. Additional savings will be generated by reducing the reliance on contractors and reviewing existing supply chain contracts. Furthermore, the organization plans to halt the upgrade of its network to full fibre beyond current commitments, opting instead to deliver a low-cost upgrade that reaches 2Gbps speeds by the end of next year.

The cost-reduction strategy was revealed alongside the latest quarterly results, which indicated that Virgin Media O2 lost 23,300 broadband and 7,800 consumer mobile customers in the quarter leading up to the end of September. The company also anticipates incurring £250m in restructuring costs and is reviewing its cash distributions to shareholders for the year. Meanwhile, discussions regarding wholesale deals are underway, including a potential agreement with BT’s Openreach to broaden its service footprint.

Virgin Media O2 targets significant cost savings and increased automation to tackle its multibillion-pound debt pile.

Why it matters

These extensive workforce reductions and operational shifts signal a major corporate restructuring for Virgin Media O2 as it attempts to streamline its business model amidst mounting financial pressures. The transition towards automated customer service tools and revised network investment strategies will shape how telecommunication services are delivered to millions of consumers in the region.

This corporate realignment highlights the broader challenges traditional telecom operators face in balancing heavy infrastructure investments, rising debt levels, and shifting consumer subscriber bases in a competitive market.
