Apple warns of unprecedented rise in memory chip costs

Apple shares fell after-hours as the tech giant warned that soaring memory chip costs will impact profit margins despite stronger-than-expected revenue.

Apple has issued a warning regarding an unprecedented surge in memory chip expenses as the corporation competes with datacentres to secure essential supplies. The situation comes as the technology sector grapples with intense demand for memory components driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure.

During a conference call, Apple chief executive John Ternus stated that pricing conditions for memory are currently without precedent and predicted that costs in the upcoming fourth quarter will exceed those of the previous three-month period. To mitigate these pressures, the company previously increased prices for iPads and MacBooks in June, followed by adjustments for iPhones in September, which provided a partial financial offset.

Despite these supply chain headwinds, Apple reported stronger-than-expected revenue for the fiscal third quarter, marking a positive beginning for Ternus since he assumed his role in September. The firm brought in $30.71 billion during the July to September window, representing a 12 percent increase compared to $27.47 billion in the same timeframe the previous year. This figure included five cents per share originating from tariff refunds. FactSet analyst polls had previously projected lower average earnings.

Surging memory chip prices will pressure profit margins despite strong third-quarter revenue growth.

Market observers noted that the quarterly performance displayed resilience, bolstered by strong iPhone revenue and robust growth in China, contrasting with disappointing results from several other major technology entities. Furthermore, Apple's cautious approach toward artificial intelligence infrastructure spending has helped protect its cash flow while enabling capability enhancements through strategic external partnerships.

Why it matters

The warnings from Apple highlight the widespread competitive pressure for electronic components between consumer device manufacturers and expanding AI datacentres. For global consumers and markets, rising input costs signal that maintaining hardware affordability while funding next-generation features remains a significant challenge for major technology manufacturers.
