While Australia's price increases outpace many advanced nations, a strong labor market places the country near the middle of the global misery index.
Stressed mortgage holders might wonder if the national price pressures are worse than elsewhere following the central bank's fifth interest rate increase of the year. According to Challenger chief economist Jonathan Kearns, the local cost pressures are clearly higher than in other nations. Average consumer prices grew by 4.3% in the year leading up to September and are projected to accelerate further before the year concludes, outpacing comparable advanced economies and the eurozone.
Despite faster cost increases, the local workforce remains resilient. Australia has outperformed New Zealand, Canada, and European nations in maintaining lower unemployment rates, which serves as a significant economic advantage. To evaluate whether the national economic pain is truly greater than in other regions, economists often apply a simple metric created during the 1970s by an American economist named Arthur Okun.
Understanding the misery index
Known as the misery index, this concept combines jobless rates and price growth to offer a broad overview of household experiences. When evaluated through this combined measure, the nation shifts from having the worst price pressures among peers to landing squarely in the middle of the pack globally.
Australia shows high price pressures but sits mid-pack globally when unemployment is factored in.
While this ranking may offer limited immediate relief to struggling households, it provides broader context during a challenging economic phase.
Why it matters
Comparing the national economy to international peers offers essential perspective on broader financial conditions. Understanding how stronger employment balances out faster price increases helps households and policymakers evaluate overall economic health during periods of rising interest rates.
