Domestic banks have tightened loan approval standards for nonbank financial firms while simultaneously reporting stronger demand from business lenders and private-equity funds, according to the Federal Reserve's November 2 survey. This combination points to a financing constraint that could limit investors' appetite for Bitcoin beyond any changes in the Fed's policy rate.

For business credit intermediaries specifically, 12 of 50 responding domestic banks tightened their standards, one eased them, and 37 left them unchanged. This produced a net tightening of 22 percentage points. Domestic banks reported net tightening across all five nonbank borrower categories surveyed, most frequently citing an uncertain economic outlook and deterioration in borrowers' financial strength.

At the same time, banks reported stronger demand from business credit intermediaries and private-equity funds for funds actually disbursed. Common reasons for this demand included working capital, liquidity needs, refinancing, and investment opportunities. While approval tightening is real, neither its bank-share measure nor the survey dates establish forced Bitcoin selling.

Tighter bank lending rules and financing constraints could limit investor appetite for Bitcoin.

The October Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey covered the preceding three months, with responses due on October 5. Meanwhile, the ICE BofA US high-yield option-adjusted spread rose from 3.14 percent on October 28 to 3.44 percent on October 30, a widening of 30 basis points. The Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index stood at -0.487 for the week ending October 23, indicating conditions looser than average.

Approval standards determine access to credit, meaning financing can become harder to obtain without a new policy-rate increase. The Federal Reserve held its target range between 3.75 percent and 4 percent on October 28. If financing becomes harder to secure while liquidity needs rise, investors may have less capacity or willingness to hold risky assets, a dynamic previously highlighted by a 2023 International Monetary Fund working paper.

Why it matters

A stronger signal of market spillover would involve continued widening in credit premiums alongside weakening Bitcoin demand. For now, the Federal Reserve survey presents a financing constraint worth watching as broader economic conditions evolve.
