Canadian search teams have confirmed that a mother and her 20-year-old daughter were killed by grizzly bears near Bella Coola, British Columbia.
Canadian authorities have confirmed that a mother and her adult daughter were killed in a fatal wildlife encounter involving what conservation officers believe could be multiple grizzly bears. The tragic event unfolded near a trail in British Columbia, leaving a remote community grieving and sparking local warnings to stay away from the area.
The victims were identified as art therapist Jenny Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter, Selah Reed. Relatives had reported the two missing over the weekend after they failed to make contact. Family members later discovered their vehicle parked at a trailhead near Bella Coola, a remote community of approximately 2,100 residents located at the end of a fjord on the province's central coast. Conservation officers subsequently located Balcarras's remains near the Snooka West trail area, about eight kilometres east of town, with Reed's body discovered a day later.
Conservation officials in British Columbia suspect multiple grizzly bears were involved in the fatal attack.
Inspector Jeff Tyre stated in an online video that the conservation service is actively investigating whether more than one bear was involved in the tragedy. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area entirely to ensure safety and allow investigation teams to operate without interference. Samuel Schooner, elected chief of the Nuxalk Nation, expressed condolences to the grieving family while confirming that a trapping effort to find the bear was underway.
The incident has deeply affected the region, particularly coming months after a separate incident where multiple people were injured by a grizzly near a walking trail. Local officials and community leaders have shared messages of profound grief and solidarity with the families impacted by the wildlife encounter.
Why it matters
This tragic event highlights the delicate balance between human populations and wildlife in remote, rugged regions like the Great Bear rainforest, where abundant food sources make grizzly bears a regular presence. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers associated with wildlife habitats in remote areas, prompting heightened caution among residents and visitors alike.
