The bitcoin price traded near $80,000 on Wednesday afternoon, rising about 3% for the day following a sharp recovery from an election-night low of $75,600. According to Bitcoin Magazine Pro data, the leading cryptocurrency changed hands at $80,099 at 3:12 p.m. ET, accompanied by a market capitalization of roughly $1.61 trillion and approximately $39.6 billion in trading volume over the preceding 24 hours.

The market volatility began during Tuesday night's election returns, which revealed that Democrats captured both chambers of Congress. This outcome triggered an initial dip to the session low in the 10 p.m. ET hour, followed by a robust recovery that peaked in the 10 a.m. hour on Wednesday, marking a swing of about 7.3% across roughly 12 hours. Analysts noted that the upward surge was largely driven by a short squeeze. Over a 24-hour window, approximately $950 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated, with bearish bets accounting for $560 million of that total. Bitcoin positions represented $403 million of the liquidations, with 76% of those being short positions. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju reported via X that $215 million in bitcoin shorts were wiped out within a single hour.

Market observers suggested the market reaction reflected relief after initial uncertainty cleared. CoinShares head of research James Butterfill stated that the Democratic sweep was largely priced into bitcoin ahead of the ballot, while Lumida CEO Ram Ahluwalia anticipated a decisive washout event resetting asset valuations. Concurrently, traditional financial markets rallied, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining about 3,000 points or 3%, the S&P 500 rising 1.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite increasing by 1.8%. Simultaneously, Brent crude tumbled more than 9% to $93.91 per barrel following comments from Vice President JD Vance regarding the Iran conflict, which provided relief against hot inflation pressures.

Policy Challenges and Institutional Flows

Despite the immediate price recovery, institutional demand exhibited ongoing weakness as U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs shed $115.6 million on Tuesday, marking their third consecutive session of outflows. Furthermore, legislative prospects faced headwinds, with TD Cowen analyst Jaret Seiberg writing that the Democratic majority makes a crypto-backed CLARITY Act difficult to advance as oversight committees transition in January.

Why it matters

The recent political shift in Washington alters the legislative landscape for digital assets while broader macroeconomic indicators, including falling oil prices and shifting Federal Reserve rate expectations, influence overall market stability. These developments shape the broader investment environment and affect how digital assets interact with traditional financial systems.
