European 1500m champion and two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34 following a battle with bowel cancer.

Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, who achieved continental gold and competed at a pair of Olympic Games, has passed away at the age of 34, according to an announcement from her family. A statement shared on the athlete's social media accounts confirmed that she lost her battle with bowel cancer early Sunday morning while surrounded by her loved ones. Mageean's death follows her marriage to her long-term partner in Belfast just weeks prior. The prominent runner had publicly revealed her advanced cancer diagnosis in July 2025 and subsequently underwent treatment.

Hailing from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean cemented her status as a premier middle-distance runner across the island, setting multiple national records. She represented the republic at the Rio Olympics in 2016, the Tokyo Games in 2021, and secured her career-defining victory by capturing the 1,500 metres title at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in 2024. Although she qualified for the Paris Olympics that same year, an Achilles tendon injury prevented her from competing on the track.

Throughout her illness, Mageean maintained a positive outlook, publicly expressing gratitude for support and stating she continued to find joy in everyday moments. In a June interview with the BBC, she reflected on her career with appreciation, noting she was fortunate to experience a path many others never reach. Tributes poured in from athletic organizations and political leaders alike. The Olympic Federation of Ireland stated that the country had lost a hero. Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill remembered her for her warmth, courage, and strength of character, while Republic of Ireland Taoiseach Micheal Martin expressed profound sadness over her untimely passing.
