Cryptocurrency platform Binance has started restoring customer withdrawals following a massive cyberattack that resulted in billions in stolen digital assets.

The world's largest digital asset trading platform has begun to reactivate customer withdrawals after a security breach led to the theft of roughly six billion dollars in cryptocurrency. Operations started coming back online over the weekend, following a temporary freeze implemented immediately after the Thursday incident to allow internal teams to examine the network intrusion and perform thorough safety audits.

The organization stated that about ninety-five percent of impacted holdings have already been replaced. Leadership emphasized that the company itself will absorb the financial burden rather than passing losses onto clients. Restoration is proceeding gradually, starting with major digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ether alongside select stablecoin operations.

Management cautioned that elevated traffic might generate processing delays. Clients experiencing transaction errors were advised to attempt their transfers again after a brief pause. Additional features will unlock progressively once security verifications conclude, while internal specialists maintain cooperation with law enforcement agencies and industry collaborators to track and retrieve the missing funds.

United States authorities announced that state-sponsored actors from North Korea were behind the incident, tying the event to digital operations tracked under the designation TraderTraitor. Investigators noted that the culprits transferred the acquired holdings mainly into ether tokens and warned that subsequent laundering attempts are anticipated via decentralised finance protocols and instant exchange services. The same government-linked actors were previously connected by federal agencies to a past theft affecting the Bybit platform.

Initial assessments from the exchange indicated that an exploited employee workstation might have facilitated the unauthorized entry, though subsequent checks revealed additional vulnerabilities. The inquiry remains active, and management promised to release a comprehensive report upon its finalization.

Binance has replaced ninety-five percent of affected assets and absorbed the financial impact.

Why it matters

The gradual restoration of transactions signals progress in managing the aftermath of one of the largest digital thefts on record, directly impacting platform users who temporarily lost access to their funds. Continued investigations into state-sponsored cyber operations highlight ongoing security challenges within the broader financial technology sector.
