An amateur cricketer nicknamed 'Clicky Ponting' has received a two-year ban for using a finger-clicking trick to deceive umpires during matches.
An English amateur cricketer who gained international notoriety for a finger-clicking deception has been officially suspended for two years. The player, Brian Devine, became known as Clicky Ponting on social media due to the nickname's reference to former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League (NYSDCL) confirmed the sanction following a thorough investigation into his conduct on the field.
The Clicky Ponting controversy
The disciplinary action stems from incidents where Devine was accused of clicking his fingers to mimic the sound of a ball nicking the bat. By producing this noise during missed deliveries that were subsequently caught by the wicketkeeper, he aimed to trick umpires into awarding a dismissal. The footage of these actions went viral earlier this year, prompting the league to convene a three-person disciplinary panel. The panel reviewed the video evidence alongside player interviews and written statements before issuing the ban.
Brian Devine is banned from all cricket activities for two years following his finger-clicking deception scandal.
According to the NYSDCL, the suspension is effective from 30 September 2026 until 29 September 2028. The ban is comprehensive, prohibiting Devine from playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring, or managing any junior teams under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board. In addition to the player's suspension, Saltburn Cricket Club was fined 300 pounds. The club’s second XI has been relegated to Division Three and will face a 60-point deduction at the start of the 2027 season. While both the club and the player admitted to the charges, Saltburn initially appealed the severity of the sanction before ultimately accepting the final decision.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting previously addressed the controversy, noting that while he found the situation amusing, he was less pleased to have his name associated with a player accused of blatant cheating. He remarked in an interview that he had a laugh about the incident but quickly moved on from it. The league has stated that it recognizes the strain the incident placed on those involved, particularly those who faced abuse online or in person, and has requested that the public respect the conclusion of the formal process.
Why it matters
This decision marks the end of a high-profile disciplinary case that highlighted the importance of integrity in amateur sports. By imposing a significant ban and club-level penalties, the league has sent a clear message regarding the consequences of unsportsmanlike conduct.
The ruling affects all levels of club cricket under the board's jurisdiction, ensuring that the standards of fair play are upheld. It serves as a reminder that even at the amateur level, actions caught on camera can lead to severe professional repercussions.
