Proton users are sharing subscription cancellations and demanding leadership changes following reports that Chief Executive Officer Andy Yen pressured engineers to embrace artificial intelligence while dismissing security testing requests as loser thinking. The controversy centers on the Swiss privacy company known for its encrypted email and security offerings, raising questions about whether speed could compromise user protection.
In August, a company employee asked for a few days to perform penetration testing on new code before release. Internal reporting revealed that Yen rejected the request, calling it bullshit and loser thinking while insisting that speed and security can coexist. He also directed staff to halt manual coding in favor of AI tools and announced plans to evaluate how employees utilized these technologies in their daily tasks. The disclosures drew from internal messages, meeting recordings, and nine current and former workers.
The backlash directly threatens Proton's core reputation for privacy and trust. While the organization provides end-to-end encryption to shield communications, dissatisfied customers took to social media platforms like Reddit to voice anger, cancel plans, or demand new leadership. A feedback forum proposal urging Yen to resign accumulated over two thousand votes.
Proton Users Express Concerns Over Automated Development
Proton leadership has defended its broader technological direction. On November 1, technology chief Bart Butler published an engineering manifesto arguing that failing to integrate AI poses an existential threat to the company. Butler compared manual coding to memorizing phone numbers and stated that the primary role of engineers is now to help large language models generate code more efficiently. Management acknowledged that staff experienced anxiety and that communication was sometimes blunt, but maintained that swift adaptation is necessary for market competition.
Amid internal pressure and employee concerns regarding potential job evaluations tied to AI usage, Yen canceled the planned assessments on October 30. Although public backlash has sparked visible anger and cancellation notices on digital forums, cancelling a paid subscription does not automatically result in complete account deletion, and the exact count of departing customers remains unverified.
