Cyprus Realigns Geopolitically as Historic Cyprus Russia Relations Shift
The Republic of Cyprus is phasing out Russian military ties and deepening defense cooperation with the United States in a major geopolitical shift.
The Republic of Cyprus is experiencing a profound diplomatic transition, moving away from its traditional ties with Moscow to forge a strategic alignment with the United States. Historically, cyprus russia relations formed a cornerstone of the island's foreign policy, allowing Nicosia to maintain a delicate balance between East and West following its independence in 1960.
Under Archbishop Makarios III, the first president of independent Cyprus, the nation helped found the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961. This strategy permitted Nicosia to cultivate connections with the Soviet Union without alienating Western nations. Even after entering the European Union in 2004, Cyprus preserved robust political, economic, and military bonds with Moscow. Historical grievances involving the 1974 Turkish invasion, subsequent US policy choices, and a 1987 American arms embargo further solidified the Cypriot military's reliance on Soviet and Russian weapons systems.
However, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 served as a definitive turning point. According to Konstantinos Adamides, an associate professor of international relations at the University of Nicosia, the conflict accelerated a geopolitical realignment that was already underway, with the country choosing to align with Western sanctions despite potential economic repercussions.
Cyprus is ending decades of reliance on Moscow to forge a close strategic alignment with the United States.
Recent diplomatic developments highlight this transformation. During an October interview with the Cyprus News Agency, US Ambassador John Breslow detailed proposals to upgrade the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos for large military transport aircraft, increase warport visits by US vessels, and expand joint military activities. Although these measures do not constitute a formal security guarantee, Breslow assured that the United States would protect Cyprus in the future.
Why it matters
This evolving security framework marks a departure from decades of neutrality and non-alignment, altering the geopolitical balance in the Eastern Mediterranean. By phasing out Russian military dependencies and hosting enhanced American infrastructure, Nicosia is redefining its international partnerships and its security posture in the region.
