A motorist who ran over a cycling headteacher and dragged him under his car for more than a mile has received a life sentence with a 25-year minimum term.
A motorist who ploughed into a headteacher cycling home from school and dragged him trapped under his vehicle for more than a mile has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Simon Richardson, aged 35, must serve a minimum of 25 years behind bars after a jury at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court found him guilty of murder.
The tragic incident unfolded on the evening of April 20 in the village of Warburton in Trafford, Greater Manchester. Richardson ignored give-way signs at a junction and crashed into 56-year-old Michael Mullins, who was riding his bicycle home from Stretford Grammar School. The victim struck the bonnet and windscreen of the Volvo XC90 before becoming entangled in the suspension underneath.

During the trial, the prosecution revealed that Richardson continued driving for over a mile with the victim trapped inches beneath the vehicle. His front-seat passenger and cousin, Gabrielle Debotte, testified that they both heard moaning noises as they fled the scene and that Richardson acknowledged the victim was underneath the car. The driver eventually drove to a secluded farm track in Lymm, where he attempted to dislodge the body by twice trying to pull him out and maneuvering the vehicle sharply from side to side before mounting a grass verge.
A motorcyclist followed a trail of blood from the initial collision site and discovered Mullins barely breathing on the grass verge. Emergency services were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead from multiple injuries. Richardson had denied knowing the father of two was underneath his vehicle.
Mrs Justice Brunner KC, sentencing the defendant on Monday, stated that Richardson exhibited an astonishing degree of disregard for human life. The court also heard details of the offender's extensive criminal history, which included 28 previous offences and a significant pattern of driving-related convictions spanning over a decade.

The victim's wife, Sarah, delivered an emotional statement to the court describing how her life had been shattered by the violent loss of her husband, whom she called their family anchor. Elizabeth Baxter, the acting head of Stretford Grammar School, paid tribute to Mullins, noting that he had led the institution for 17 years and left an irreplaceable void.
