Opposition parties hold nationwide demonstrations against electoral roll revisions as political rows intensify over public policy and governance in Karnataka and Punjab.
The INDIA bloc held a significant demonstration at Freedom Park in Bengaluru to voice strong opposition against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. During this nationwide protest, participants wore masks depicting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, symbolically calling for his imprisonment while demanding the restoration of deleted voters, excluding those who are deceased. The coalition has vowed to continue its agitation until they achieve what they describe as full justice regarding the electoral process.
INDIA bloc protest and regional political developments
Beyond the electoral concerns, Karnataka is facing a period of heightened political debate following state-level price hikes. The government recently increased Nandini milk prices by 8 to 12 rupees per litre and raised public transport fares by 23 percent. State representatives argue these adjustments are essential to support farmers and manage operational costs, particularly amidst rising fuel prices and drought conditions. Congress spokesperson Raghu Dodderi urged the central government to reduce fuel cesses to alleviate the burden on the public. Conversely, the BJP has criticized the administration, alleging that state guarantee schemes have depleted government coffers and contributed to fiscal mismanagement.

In Punjab, the political climate remains volatile as the BJP has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of shielding a paper leak mafia following the announcement of the Punjab Public Service Commission mains examination results. The BJP has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe, labeling the incident a betrayal of the youth. The AAP has rejected these claims, asserting that the recruitment process was conducted with full integrity and that over 75,000 jobs have been awarded strictly on merit.
Meanwhile, in Haryana, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the upcoming Punjab assembly elections by criticizing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding agricultural procurement policies. Shah claimed that Haryana already provides Minimum Support Price (MSP) on 24 crops and encouraged farmers to reject Congress guarantees in favor of the BJP or NDA, which he argues are better equipped to address their needs.
Why it matters
These events highlight the growing friction between opposition coalitions and governing parties across India. The disputes over electoral processes, state fiscal policies, and recruitment integrity directly impact public trust and the daily economic conditions of citizens in Karnataka and Punjab.
