Binance and Polymarket are seeking a coordinated effort to recover digital assets following separate security incidents. The two platforms have submitted a governance proposal for a Polygon network hard fork to reclaim approximately 70.49 million POL tokens, a haul valued at roughly $6.8 million. As users often search for information regarding Binance and Polymarket, this development highlights the complex nature of asset recovery in decentralized finance environments.

According to the proposal released on Wednesday, the recovery effort targets 23.86 million POL, worth $2.31 million, linked to four addresses associated with the Polymarket hack. Additionally, it seeks to recover 46.63 million POL, valued at $4.51 million, from a single address connected to the recent Binance security breach. The proposed hard fork aims to move these assets from the attacker-controlled addresses into verified recovery wallets designated by the respective platforms. The process is designed to occur at a specific block height without altering the total supply of POL.

A proposed Polygon hard fork would allow stolen crypto funds to be recovered and returned to their owners.

Current Status of Stolen Funds

Polygon block producers have already implemented a temporary measure by freezing transactions from the affected addresses. While this action has successfully prevented the stolen funds from being moved, the current protocol limitations do not allow for the assets to be returned to their rightful owners. The proposed hard fork is intended to provide a permanent solution to this issue.

Before the network can undergo these changes, the plan must pass through the governance process and undergo rigorous testing on the Polygon Amoy testnet. A discussion regarding the proposal is scheduled for November 5, though no official date for the mainnet activation has been set. The proposal follows a series of security challenges, including a major incident involving Binance and a separate breach where Polymarket temporarily suspended trading after a third-party provider was compromised.

Why it matters

This proposal represents a significant attempt to utilize network governance to rectify security breaches. If successful, it would provide a mechanism for platforms to recover stolen assets that have been frozen by block producers, directly impacting the security and recovery protocols for major crypto exchanges.

For participants in the ecosystem, this highlights the collaborative role of network validators and platforms in managing security incidents. By moving beyond simple freezing mechanisms, the industry may establish a new precedent for handling stolen funds in decentralized networks.
