Brazilian cryptocurrency platform Mercado Bitcoin announced plans to gradually restore client account access starting on Monday. This development follows a recent security incident involving unauthorized transfers from the company hot wallets and user deposit addresses, which blockchain specialists estimated led to the loss of more than $46 million in digital assets.
In communication shared with Cointelegraph, the company confirmed that users will initially be able to check their account balances, holdings, statements, and investments through the official website. However, asset transfers, withdrawals, and trading activities will remain paused until independent security verifications are completed.
Mercado Bitcoin will use company funds and frozen assets to cover losses from the breach.
To address the fallout, the platform committed to utilizing internal reserves to replace the impacted customer assets. Representatives noted that more than $15 million in stolen funds have already been frozen with assistance from industry partners. Additionally, the trading desk is organizing necessary repurchases across domestic and international markets.
Regarding financial stability, the company highlighted a solid cash position. This strength was previously reinforced by a $20 million funding injection from stablecoin issuer Tether, intended to support ongoing operational growth and expansion efforts.
This staged resumption directly impacts cryptocurrency holders utilizing Mercado Bitcoin by dictating when and how they can regain visibility over their digital assets. While account viewing begins soon, continued suspension of trading and withdrawals means users must wait for complete security checks before managing their portfolios fully.
